How Did Your Brain Injury Happen?

Any blow to the head can cause a traumatic brain injury. When you hit your head, or your head is suddenly jerked or violently shaken, the impact moves your brain within your skull and damages it.

Some of the most frequent causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are:

  • Falls. Falling and hitting your head is the No. 1 cause of brain injury. Elderly adults and young children are most likely to fall and suffer a TBI. But anyone can slip and fall on an icy sidewalk, slip or trip because of a spill or clutter in a store aisle or office lobby, or because of a loose stair tread or torn carpet at a hotel or restaurant.
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents. The impact of a car, truck or motorcycle accident may cause both drivers and passengers to hit their head, be hit in the head by loose cargo, or to suffer a violent jolt that damages the brain. Pedestrians and bicycle riders hit by motor vehicles are likely to suffer head and brain injury as they are knocked to the ground.
  • Sports / Recreation. Many of us have become more aware of sports- and recreation-related concussions in recent years. Sports and recreation TBIs are most common in accidents suffered in playground activities, bicycling, football, basketball, soccer, diving, and while riding off-road vehicles.
  • Workplace Injuries. Many TBIs are occupational injuries that occur during the course of the victim’s job duties. Job-related TBIs happen when a worker falls on surfaces that are uneven, wet and slippery or cluttered, or in falls from heights, such as ladders, scaffolds, and roofs. Being struck by objects, such as by something that falls onto a worker’s head, is another common cause of workplace head injuries. Such accidents can happen in any line of work but are more common in the construction and transportation industries.
  • Assault / Abuse. Many TBIs are caused by criminal assault, particularly among young adults. A form of child abuse known as “shaken baby syndrome” is abusive head trauma caused by violently shaking an infant.

If you or a loved one has suffered a serious brain injury, you likely know how it happened. What you need for a legal claim against the person(s) responsible is evidence of their negligence or recklessness. Attorney David Blackwell can gather evidence and develop a solid case for compensation to help you move forward.
